pixilated pixel and apotheosis of the infinite.
Sounds like it’s time to put on Holland, 1945 and make some art.
Damn, I completely forgot to post this when it first got finished. Whoops.
Anyway, here she is in all her glory. Cubic Chess. My Baby. She stands about forty inches tall by thirty-seven inches long by thirty inches wide. The cube rotates completely; the pieces hold on very well; the stand… stands.
I have played a complete game. It took about five hours, I think? Which is kind of a lot for a game, but I suppose if people are willing to do it for Monopoly and Risk, they can do it for Cubic Chess. Especially because it’s so damned fun.
Well, mostly. Sort of.
Here’s what I’ve got so far:
A wooden frame for the cube itself, with the rod going from corner to corner

All six metal sides of my cube cut, lined, and primed - ready to be painted and then mounted onto the wooden frame (actually, I’m probably going to mount first and then paint them; I’m going to try this super-epoxy stuff first, and I want to try that long enough before it’s due that if the sides start falling off, I can figure out something else)

All but 30 pawns and 5 rooks (I’ve cleaned Wal-Mart out of chess sets at least three times; I only need two more now), with around twenty pieces still needing to be painted

The wood to be used for the stand, measured out and ready to be cut properly

Beautiful red mahogany wood stain, for all my wooden sections (gonna make this thing look classy as balls)

Screws for added support
A lovely assortment of sprays of differing sorts to make everything look as it should

This is how I intend for it to look, as represented by MS Paint

If need be, I will add vertical support beams to the diagonal stand, but the more I work with this wood, the less I think I’ll need that. We’ll see.
If I’m feeling especially productive, I might get this finished this weekend. More likely, I’ll get it finished around Monday or Tuesday.
Or possibly Wednesday Night, half an hour before it’s due.
You never know.
Here are the pieces (not all of them; there are about twenty-five that have magnets but aren’t painted yet, and I still need about thirty more pawns, which I’ll be getting tomorrow or maybe Saturday), sitting pretty on their metal sheet:
And just in case you didn’t believe they’re all magnetized:
Now, here is the base for the cube itself, which doesn’t yet have the metal. I’d say it weighs maybe ten or fifteen pounds, and is quite large. It’s gonna be a monster when it’s finished:
Aaand, if you’re like me, you have trouble really putting any sort of meaning behind phrases like “seventeen by seventeen by seventeen inches,” so here it is next to me:
I dunno about all of you, but I am really excited about this.
Reblogging this to put on my art blog
Because I am just so freaking proud of this whole thing, I’ll have another update on the chess cube - even though really nothing has changed since the last one. I just got all the pieces organized and got a final count on what I still need.
I only need thirty more pawns (ten more each for black, grey, and white) and five more rooks (two more each for black and white, and one more for grey). That’s only two more sets. I thought I needed three or four more, but I DON’T. :D
I still need to paint the most recent additions, but other than those and the missing pieces, I present to you all the three armies of Cubic Chess.
I suppose this should also go here, as this is my art blog.
